April . . . is that you?

A few days ago, I got an email from Chris Baty, my not-s0-secret writerly crush and creator of NaNoWriMo. The email was a reminder that ScriptFrenzy, a challenge similar to NaNoWriMo that produces a 100-page script for a movie, play, or graphic novel, starts in April.

This reminded me that, last April while I was doing NaPoWriMo, I found myself regretting not attempting ScriptFrenzy, as well or instead. I told myself I would alternate years, which makes this year, in theory, a script-writing year.  I was pining over the script for a play that I wanted to write back when I was in college.

I never imagined that April would come again so fast. While I was writing the first draft of my current novel, I found myself worrying that it perhaps wanted to be a short story. Now writing the second draft, I’ve recently become pre-occupied with the idea of repurposing it as a graphic novel. The more I think about it, the more I feel that this is the most appropriate venue for the story, which relies more on visual effects than most of what I’ve written recently. And, if I really want to, I can convince myself that this is all fated, and that I simply must spend April writing a graphic novel adaptation of the thing.

But then, I know deep down that this is just one more trick to avoid writing an ending. To those who will be attempting ScriptFrenzy for nobler purposes, my hat’s off to you!
